Prototype History Aristo-Craft Refrigerator or 'Reefer' cars are based upon a forty-foot Steel Freight Railcar of the 1930’s era.
However, the concept of a refrigerated railcar may have been around as early as the mid-1800’s. The prototype of the Swift Reefer (ART-46227) has been documented frequently transporting beef during the Civil War.
A variety of methods were used to keep the perishable cargo cool including crushed ice, mechanical refrigeration, and heat-reflective surfaces on the exterior of the car.
